Joint statement from the Ministers of Finance in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden regarding lending to Latvia

The IMF Executive Board has today approved a financial package for Latvia. The package is linked to an extraordinary strong economic reform programme that includes a fiscal consolidation of around 7 percent of GDP already in 2009. The Nordic countries stand ready to support Latvia’s efforts and provide credits of up to €1.8 billion contingent on the successful implementation of the reform programme.

Evaluation of the Ethical Guidelines for the Government Pension Fund - Global

Public Hearing on Ethical Guidelines

The Norwegian Government has initiated an evaluation of the ethical guidelines for the Government pension Fund - Global. As part of the evaluation, the Ministry of Finance is conducting a public consultation and has distributed a consultation paper for comments. Yesterday, as the paper was sent out, the Minister of Finance held a discussion with relevant stakeholders.

Investments in the Israel Electric Corporation

The Ministry of Finance has concluded, based on the recommendations of the Council on Ethics, that it would be unfounded to exclude the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) from the investment universe of the Government Pension Fund – Global (GPFG).

Comment on U.S. Commitment to an Open Investment Environment

In a comment to the proposal for regulations of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), the Ministry of Finance welcomes the U.S. commitment to an open investment environment.

In the hearing on "Foreign Government Investment in the U.S. Economy and Financial Sector" in the U.S. House of Representatives on 5 March 2008, Director General Martin Skancke spoke on the management of the Government Pension Fund - Global and Norway's position in the international debate on Sovereign Wealth Funds.

EU Commission proposal on SWF

- Norway welcomes the recent communication on a common European approach to Sovereign Wealth Funds from the European Commission. The announcement contributes to the ongoing work in the IMF on establishing a voluntary code of conduct for SWFs, says Minister of Finance Kristin Halvorsen.

De etiske retningslinjene for Statens Pensjonsfond – Utland skal evalueres. Som en start på evalueringsprosessen holder Finansdepartementet den internasjonal konferansen "investing for the Future- Financial Investments and Ethical Considerations " 16. og 17. januar på Radisson Plaza Hotell i Oslo. Konferansen arrangeres i samarbeid med Norges Bank og Etikkrådet.
