Internasjonalt samarbeid om landbruk og mat

Landbruks- og matdepartementets virkeområde er nært knyttet opp til en rekke internasjonale prosesser og avtaler. Dette legger rammene for utformingen av mål og virkemidler innenfor de ulike områdene i mat- og landbrukspolitikken; jordbruk, skogbruk, mattrygghet og forskning.

Miljøhensyn er integrert i alle disse politikkområdene, og som en del av internasjonale prosesser og avtaler. Det er en målsetting å arbeide aktivt internasjonalt for å ta vare på nasjonale interesser og samtidig bidra til framgang i de internasjonale prosessene.

Benefit Sharing Fund strengthened by almost NOK 700,000

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food, on behalf of Norway, recently contributed NOK 683,000 to a Benefit Sharing Fund that has been created under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA). The fund has been created to stimulate the preservation and development of plant genetic resources among individual farmers, especially in developing countries.

Svalbard Global Seed Vault secures future seed

This year it is five years since the first boxes of seeds from food crops were carried into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Today, more than 770,000 different seed samples are deposited in the vault for long-term storage.

More than 25,000 seed samples from 17 different countries will arrive in Svalbard this week. This latest seed shipment from Brazil, Burundi, Chile, Mali and Mongolia, among other countries, brings the total number of seed types in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault to more than three quarters of a million.

Changes to border protection for selected agricultural products

Increased border protection for selected products is essential to Norwegian food production. Changes are fully consistent with Norway’s international commitments. Change to “ad valorem” duties for only one out of six import cheeses. No price hikes or reduced variety of imported products next year. New import quota for beef from developing countries secures increased imports.

International agreement on genetic resources in Svalbard

During the period from 11 to 13 September 2012, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held an international meeting in Longyearbyen, Svalbard to discuss possible future paths for the management of genetic resources for agriculture and food. Norway hosted the meeting, which attracted around 100 participants and translators from all over the world.

Agriculture Minister Vedum promotes food security

“The ClimaAdapt Project has an urgency about it. During my few days in India, farmers have shown me challenges with regards to monsoon, poor harvests and sinking groundwater levels. Food security must be on top of the agenda,” says Agriculture Minister Trygve S. Vedum. Mr. Vedum visited India 16-18 August to launch ClimaAdapt, an Indo-Norwegian research project coordinated by Bioforsk of Norway.

Norway contributes to plant breeding in developing countries

From 2009 Norway is going to give an annual contribution to the International Treaty’s benefit-sharing fund for financing plant breeding in developing countries and challenge other OECD-members to contribute likewise. If all the challenged countries accept, the fund can get some 200 million dollars during a ten year period.
