In the framework of the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, a conference will be held in Røros from 14-16 May 2012. The conference, titled “Living with World Heritage”, will discuss World Heritage and sustainable development and the role of local communities. Røros Mining Town, the conference venue, is one of Norway’s seven World Heritage properties, and the town has a vivid local community.

The conference has an interregional focus emphasizing Europe and Africa. The aim is to create a forum for dialogue between global, national and local stakeholders and to strengthen cooperation between experts, managers and local representatives.

Representatives from five World Heritage properties in Norway and South Africa will meet before the conference to discuss common issues related to the conference theme. The results from these dialogues will be an important contribution to the discussions at the conference in May, in addition to knowledge and analysis of managers, experts, UNESCO and advisory bodies.

The organizers are the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the Directorate for Nature Management and the Norwegian National Commission for UNESCO.
