Check against delivery

The Millennium Development Goals have been successful – in bringing issues to the international political agenda, in mobilizing resources, and in forging partnerships. They have been successful in raising awareness of development goals and priorities. We have come a long way since 2000.

There is still an unfinished agenda. We need to provide all member states with an extra push for the remaining almost 700 days. There are gaps in implementation; some can be traced back to weak institutions. We are talking about the political environment that enables the Millennium Development Goals to be implemented. We are talking about accountability, about the rule of law, about good governance. We are talking about the active involvement of key stakeholders, the role of civil society and the media.

There is also a missing agenda. We have to learn from all the issues which were not part of the MDGs, and consider these issues as we discuss a new universal. Gender equality and women’s rights and empowerment are priority goals for the post-2015 process. Gender equality is an important goal in itself, and it is relevant in achieving all other development goals. This year´s CSW will be one important milestone in this discussion.
