Municipalities and regions
The Government bases its policy on the principle that, as a system of government, democracy means influence and power being spread as widely as possible. A vibrant and decentralised democracy based on broad participation is crucial if we are to address the challenges facing society. The Government pursues an active and purposeful regional policy. The goal is to ensure equal living conditions throughout the country and to maintain the main features of the decentralised settlement pattern. The Government wants people to be genuinely free to live where they wish; we wish to put the whole country to use in order to increase value creation, and we wish to contribute to more people moving to outlying regions.
The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has overriding responsibility for matters relating to housing policy, regional policy, local administration and the holding of elections.
