THE ROYAL NORWEGIAN NAVY MATERIEL COMMAND IS DIRECTLY SUBORDINATE TO HQ DEFENCE COMMAND NORWAY.

The principle aim of NAVMATCOMNOR is to provide the Norwegian Navy with the materiel required to maintain a credible fighting capability. This is achieved through the planning, procurement and quality assurance of future equipment, through the proper, quality assured maintenance of existing equipment and by establishing and sustaining the required standby and mobilisation capacity in terms of materiel and supplies.

Any potential supplier wishing to offer goods or services to the Norwegian Navy should send for NAVMATCOMNOR's general leaflet. During the course of 1997, leaflets will also be produced for each of the four departments as well as for certain important projects. The leaflets are only available in Norwegian.

Project Department

The Project Department organises all materiel projects within the Norwegian Navy, grouping them in various project programmes. In addition, the Project Department has a Coordination Division and a Planning Division, both of which provide support for the project programmes.

The Project Department's work of supplying the Navy with future materiel is carried out in liaison with the other NAVMATCOMNOR departments.

In the case of new equipment, the technical authority discharges this responsibility through active participation in the planning and conduct of the various equipment projects. The Technical Department draws up the operating budgets for all naval materiel and, as the technical authority, it also establishes terms and conditions for the other NAVMATCOMNOR departments.

The department is also responsible for the running of NAVMATCOMNOR's stores. In addition to the logistic services provided, this department is the technical authority for general supplies, motor vehicles and mess services within the Navy. It is the responsibility of the Supply Department to see that the Royal Norwegian Navy has the materiel it needs to ensure its operational readiness following mobilisation.
