Attack on Humanitarian Convoy in Darfur: Statement from the Minister of International Development

‘I condemn today’s attack on the UN humanitarian convoy in Darfur, which reportedly killed several people. They were working to deliver emergency aid to an area with immense needs. Attacks on humanitarian workers are prohibited under international humanitarian law. The parties to the conflict have imposed significant obstacles to humanitarian efforts, resulting in a starving population in dire need of food, medical assistance, and other life-saving supplies,‘ says Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.

‘There is a desperate need for every single truck carrying humanitarian aid. A massive tragedy, affecting a population ten times the size of Norway’s, is unfolding before our eyes. We once again remind all parties that they have an obligation to protect civilians and to facilitate humanitarian access. International humanitarian law is not optional, and violations of these rules must have consequences.‘
