‘I am deeply concerned about developments in Nigeria. The terrorist attacks on civilian targets in recent days are shocking and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

‘I am deeply concerned about developments in Nigeria. The terrorist attacks on civilian targets in recent days are shocking and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

The death toll following the attack by suicide bombers and gunmen on the central mosque in the city of Kano during Friday’s prayers has now risen to over 120, and an even greater number of people have been injured. ‘The attack showed a complete lack of human compassion and respect for life,’ Mr Brende said.

Since 2009, around 10 000 civilians have lost their lives in attacks by Islamist militants, who are spreading fear and suffering in Nigeria and its neighbouring countries. In the last few weeks alone, there have been a number of attacks that have killed and maimed hundreds of civilians.

‘I sincerely hope that the Nigerian authorities will succeed in combating terrorism and strengthening respect for human rights throughout the country. I would like to convey my deepest sympathy to all those who have lost loved ones in these attacks,’ said Mr Brende.
