The parliamentary elections in Venezuela

On 6 December 2020, Venezuelan authorities held legislative elections. The elections were boycotted by a major part of the opposition.

– Respect for democratic rules and principles is a precondition for lasting peace and stability. Free and fair elections, with free political parties, are necessary in order to ensure representativity and a functioning democracy, says Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide.

The EU’s High Representative/Vice-President, Josep Borrell, tried earlier this year to forge agreement on the democratic conditions for the parliamentary elections in Venezuela, but concluded that the conditions did not allow for the EU to observe them.

– I am deeply concerned by the political, economic and humanitarian situation in Venezuela. Norway encourages the political actors in the country to set the interests of the population first and do their utmost to find a political and inclusive solution that safeguards fundamental human rights, democratic participation and the rule of law, says the Foreign Minister.
