The Government of Venezuela and the Unitary Platform of Venezuela have decided to enter into negotiations on an agreement that may secure an integrated solution to the crisis in the country.

During the last six months, the parties have drawn up a framework for a political negotiation process, facilitated by Norway.

‘It is encouraging that the parties are seeking a political and negotiated solution to the crisis in the country. They have taken an important step that will benefit the Venezuelan people. I am hopeful that the negotiations will lead to positive, inclusive solutions for all Venezuelans. I would also like to thank the Government of Mexico for its hospitality and cooperation,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.

The political negotiations started in Mexico City today. The process will be facilitated by Norway.

The parties are prepared to negotiate constructively to achieve results that are beneficial for the people of Venezuela. They will carry out consultations with both political and civil society actors during the process. Moreover, there is mutual agreement on the need to respect the sensitive nature of the negotiations, in order to give the parties the space to achieve swift progress.

‘Initiating negotiations is challenging for both parties, and as facilitators we are well aware of this. It will be important to Venezuela and its people, as well as for the region as a whole, to establish a long-term solution,’ said Ms Eriksen Søreide.
