The Governments of Egypt and Norway, together with President Mahmoud Abbas, are hosting a conference entitled ‘Reconstructing Gaza’ in Cairo on 12 October. Political and financial support is urgently needed to re-establish services and enable early recovery in Gaza.

The aim of the conference is to strengthen the basis for the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Government, and improve the prospects of a political solution to the conflict. The conference has three main goals: firstly to enhance the Palestinian Government’s ability to resume governance in Gaza; secondly to strengthen the existing UN mechanism for import and export of goods and materials to and from Gaza; and thirdly to mobilise the financial support needed for reconstruction in Gaza.

The Palestinian Government will present an assessment of needs and plans for reconstruction for the next three to five years. Participating countries will be expected to make financial pledges during the conference.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Nabil El-Araby, Foreign Minister of Jordan Nasser Judeh, Foreign Minister of Italy Federica Mogherini, Foreign Minister of France Laurent Fabius, Foreign Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida and Quartet Representative Tony Blair have agreed to co-chair the conference.

Further information about the conference is available on the conference website.
