Norway supports elections in Haiti

Norway will provide USD 400 000 to support the implementation of elections in Haiti in the coming months. ‘Norway wishes to support continued democratic development in the country, and we welcome the efforts of the Haitian authorities to hold these elections despite the difficult political situation in recent years,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
Haiti is planning to hold presidential, parliamentary and local elections before the end of 2015.
‘International support for the elections will play an important part in helping to ensure political stability, good governance and better lives for the sorely tried Haitian people. We hope our contribution will encourage other donor countries to support the democratic process in the country,’ said Mr Brende.
The UN is assisting the county’s authorities with the organisation of the elections, and Norway’s funding will be channelled through the UN Development Programme. Norway will also provide Norwegian election observers to the EU observer mission through the Norwegian Resource Bank for Democracy and Human Rights (NORDEM).
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and one of the Government’s 12 focus countries for aid. Since the earthquake in 2010, in which at least 230 000 people lost their lives, Norway has supported reconstruction, development of democratic structures, and economic and social development.
