The Norwegian Government will stage an international high-level conference on climate change 27-28 May this year, in Bergen, Norway. A central issue will be the capture and storage of CO2. The aim is to present substantial contributions to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December this year.

"The aim of our conference will be to increase international awareness on carbon capture and storage as an instrument to reduce climate change. We want this conference to contribute in a substantial way to the climate summit in Copenhagen in December", Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg says.

Scientists expect fossil fuels to represent as much as 80 per cent of the global energy consumption in 2030. Carbon capture and storage alone may reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by close to 20 per cent. That is why this technology is vital in the effort to reduce emissions by 50–85 per cent by 2050.

"We will work to make the developing and commercial use of carbon capture and storage part of a new climate regime. Norway has considerable experience in this sector. Since 1996 we have been storing CO2 in the seabed below the Sleipner oil and gas field in the North Sea", Stoltenberg says.
