I am very pleased to be here today – for the opening of your new offices. Congratulations!

20 years have passed since the establishment of this Norwegian International Press Centre just before the Lillehammer Olympic Games. The idea in 1994 was to ensure good working conditions for the foreign press based in Norway. Today this is as important as ever.

Foreign correspondents continue to play a significant role in our fast-paced and globalised world. You present both news and valuable analysis to your readers, listeners and viewers. This increases the understanding between different political systems, cultures, languages and religions. The broadcasting of information about Norway to those who follow your media – in different countries around the world – helps to shape the way people abroad understand us.

Your work in the period following the terrorist attacks in 2011 is a good example. The coverage by foreign media was enormous, and you served as gate-openers and interpreters – both to the large numbers of visiting reporters and, of course, to your audiences. Your extensive knowledge of all things Norwegian was crucial, and continues to be so.

One of the first things I did after taking office in October last year was to talk to you about challenges in our foreign policy. Other members of the Government have followed suit. I believe these meetings with different ministers have given you good insight into Norwegian politics. We hope to continue to develop the close relations that exist between you and the various members of the Government, and with other politicians including members of the Storting.

I hope you will enjoy your new premises,

Thank you, and congratulations again.
