The Government will increase Norway's efforts and presence in unstable countries and areas in Europe's southern neighbourhood. Norway is establishing two new embassies in the region, in Mali and Tunisia.

'We need to adapt our policy tools to meet the new challenges in the security situation today. The Government will therefore implement a strategy for increased Norwegian engagement in fragile states and regions in the Middle East, North Africa and the Sahel,' said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

The need to intensify Norway's efforts in Europe's southern neighbourhood is one of the main conclusions in the Government's white paper on the future course of Norwegian foreign and security policy.

'Conflict and weak state structures in fragile states give rise to security challenges in Europe. We must assist these countries so they can improve the lives of those who live there. Besides, greater stability is in Norway's interest. The Government has therefore decided to establish Norwegian embassies in Mali and Tunisia,' Mr Brende said.
