Kirsten Sandberg re-elected to UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Professor Kirsten Sandberg, the candidate for Norway and the other Nordic countries, was today re-elected as member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. ‘I would like to congratulate Professor Sandberg, one of our foremost experts in the field of children’s rights, on her re-election,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.   

Kirsten Sandberg is Professor at the Department of Public and International Law at the University of Oslo. She has been a member of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child since 2011, and last year was elected chair of the Committee. In this year’s election there were 13 candidates for 9 vacant seats. Sandberg received 141 out of 191 possible votes.     

‘Professor Sandberg has played an important role in the work of the Committee, not least during the past year in her position as chair. Her re-election is a vote of confidence in her efforts and expertise. I wish her every success with a new four-year term on the Committee and in her further work to promote children’s rights,’ Mr Brende said.    

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child monitors implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by its states parties. All countries are required to report regularly to the Committee on their work in the area of children’s rights. The Committee is composed of 18 independent experts from all over the world.
