Election victory for largest governing party in Serbia

“The parliamentary elections in Serbia have given the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic a clear mandate to continue the policy of reform, the process of EU integration and work to normalise relations with Kosovo,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the largest governing party, won an overall parliamentary majority in the elections in Serbia on 16 March. This is a clear victory for the SNS, which doubled its vote from the 2012 elections. With nearly half the votes and close to two-thirds of the parliamentary seats, the SNS and its leader Aleksandar Vucic have succeeded in gaining a stronger basis for implementing much needed reforms in Serbia.   

“Norway will continue to cooperate closely with Serbia,” Mr Brende said.

As expected, the Socialist Party of Serbia, led by Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, also did well in the elections, achieving a similar result as in the previous elections.
