The humanitarian situation in Venezuela

‘I condemn the use of force by regular and irregular security forces in Venezuela against people who are trying to bring aid into the country. All use of violence and threats against peaceful demonstrators must cease immediately,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.
The situation in Venezuela is serious and tense, and the humanitarian needs are considerable. Nicolás Maduro lacks democratic legitimacy and has led Venezuela into an economic and political crisis, causing widespread suffering among the population. In Norway’s view, it is Mr Maduro who is responsible for ensuring that aid reaches those who need it and for facilitating a peaceful, political solution to the situation.
The presidential election in 2018 was not in line with international standards, and Norway therefore supports the population’s legitimate demand for democratic rights and free elections. Norway supports the democratically elected National Assembly and the legitimate president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, and his call for new elections.
‘There is a considerable risk that the conflict will escalate further, and we urge the parties, in the strongest possible terms, to find a peaceful solution that includes new elections,’ said Ms Eriksen Søreide.
