Norway increases support to Tunisia

‘The Government has proposed to increase its support to Tunisia by NOK 10 million. It is important that Tunisia succeeds in its process of democratic consolidation and is able to stand out as a success story in a troubled region,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
This increase brings Norway’s total assistance to Tunisia in 2017 to NOK 40 million. The priority areas for Norway’s development assistance in the country are good governance, inclusive economic growth and job creation, and human rights and democracy.
Tunisia is a middle-income country, but needs international assistance during a transition phase in order to implement crucial political and economic reforms that will strengthen government institutions and promote economic growth and job creation.
‘We must support Tunisia not only so that it can create a better life for those who live in the country, but also because greater stability in the region is vital both for Tunisia’s neighbouring countries and for Europe,’ said Mr Brende.
Mr Brende visited Tunisia on 2 and 3 May. During his visit, he had meetings with President Essebsi, Prime Minister Chahed and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jhinaoui. Among the topics discussed were bilateral cooperation and the situation in the region.
