The Norwegian Institute of Public Health monitors the health of the population and works to improve general health by focusing on health promotion and the prevention of disease.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health monitors the health of the population and works to improve general health by focusing on health promotion and the prevention disease. The institute monitors developments in public health and the somatic, psychiatric and social determinants that influence health.

Furthermore, the institute provides information and gives advice on health promotion and the prevention of illness and injury. The institute works with infectious disease control, environmental medicine and epidemiology, and conducts forensic toxicological analyses in order to trace alcohol and other drugs in persons involved in criminal court cases.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health is also responsible for the administration of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety. The committee is professionally independent.
