The department’s area of responsibility includes management tasks under the Building and Planning relating to urban development, municipal land-use planning, environmental impact analyses and county planning.
Important tasks are development of legislation, development and dissemination of national goals and interests in regional and local planning, approval of county and partial county plans, dealing with complaints, advice in relation to use of the planning system, policy development for sustainable cities and towns, following up national guidelines for land-use and transport planning and following up national regulations concerning a temporary ban on building of new shopping centres outside urban builtup areas.
The department is also responsible for national mapping and geodata policy and is responsible for the Norwegian Mapping Authority.
