Norway’s Honorary Consul General in Minnesota, former Vice President Walter Mondale, decided to step down as of 15 January 2010. Gary Gandrud has been appointed as his successor.

“I welcome the appointment of Gary Gandrud as new Honorary Consul General in Minneapolis. Mr Gandrud, who is an attorney, has served as Norwegian Honorary Consul since 2007. He has been instrumental in establishing and supporting a number of Norwegian-American institutions, and has a very high standing in the community,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

“I fully understand that Mr Mondale, who is now 82, has decided to retire as Honorary Consul General for Norway. I would like to thank him for his outstanding service and valuable contribution to US-Norwegian relations. Under his leadership, the Honorary Consulate General has supported the development of business ties and educational collaboration, and actively promoted cultural exchange. Known for his hard work and dedication to public service, Honorary Consul General Mondale represents the best of the Norwegian-American heritage,” said Mr Støre.
