The Norwegian Government has decided to offer 50 production licenses in the awards in predefined areas 2010 (APA 2010).

- Today I am offering participation interest in production licenses to 39 companies of which 22 companies are offered operatorship. The companies have shown great interest for APA 2010, which reflects on the number of offered production licenses. The new production licenses are well scattered within the announced sea areas. The variety of areas of interest for exploration illustrates how the companies’ views vary. The Government extended the APA-area in 2010. I am very pleased to be able to offer new production licenses in these areas, says the Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen.

The 50 production licenses are divided on the North Sea (31), the Norwegian Sea (17) and the Barents Sea (2). A total of 41 companies applied for production licenses in APA 2009.

The APA licensing rounds takes place in mature areas of the Norwegian continental shelf. Mature areas are the most explored areas on the shelf and have known geology. The main challenge in mature areas is that the expected sizes of discoveries are declining. Small discoveries can often not justify a stand-alone development, but can be profitable with a tie-in. Hence, it is important to discover and develop resources in these areas before existing infrastructure is shut down.
