UPDATE 24 SEPTEMBER 2013: Proposal: Transport Plan - BEATA Transport Ministers Declaration

- The transport system in the Barents region is in need of improvement in order to support transport needs for people and industry. I look forward to receive the proposal for the first Joint Barents Transport Plan in history, says Minister of Transport and Communications Marit Arnstad.

The idea behind the joint plan is to establish a better foundation and a common platform for development of the transport system across the borders in the North.

The proposal now ready to be presented, is made by an expert working group, lead by Norway, with representatives from the transport authorities in Sweden, Finland and Russia.

It will give an overview of the most important transport corridors and describe how transport needs of different industries will affect the development of the transport system. The expert working group will also present recommendations for measures for improvement of the transport system in the Barents region.

The Ministerial meeting will mark the end of the Norwegian chairmanship in the Barents Euro-Arctic Transport Area (BEATA). Finland will take over the Chairmanship for the coming two years. The meeting will takes place in connection with the First International Narvik Conference on Arctic Ports.
