As a follow-up to UN Security Council Resolution 2199 the Nordic Ministers of Culture at their meeting in May, adopted a joint statement in response to a proposal from Minister of Culture Thorhild Widvey. Among other things, it was decided that a joint Nordic expert conference should be held with the aim of exploring opportunities for broader Nordic collaboration on measures to combat illicit trade in cultural artefacts.

The Ministry of Culture is inviting interested parties to a joint Nordic conference in the National Library of Norway in Oslo on 2 and 3 December 2015, organized with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The purpose of the conference is to improve knowledge among relevant stakeholders, promote the exchange of experience and best practice and provide a forum for discussing opportunities for closer Nordic cooperation on measures to improve utilisation of the Nordic countries’ combined resources. The target group for the conference comprises government agencies, institutions and experts responsible for implementing measures to combat illicit trade.

The first day of the conference will focus on situation reports from the five Nordic countries. The aim is to identify weaknesses and needs and, based on these, to identify potential areas of collaboration.

The second day of the conference will be devoted to more detailed discussion of specific potential cooperation measures and areas in which cooperation may be beneficial, how synergies can be generated and exploited, relevant forms of practical cooperation, and possible next steps.

The number of participants is restricted to 140. If the number of registered attendees exceeds 140, priority will be given to public agencies from the five Nordic countries.

The conference will offer interpretation from the Scandinavian languages into English.
