Thanks to an active mother, Fredrikstad Municipality gives NOK 500 to parents that choose to use cloth nappies instead of disposables. This way the Municipality prevents one tonne of disposable nappies per child.

It is estimated that during 2,5 years a child uses one tonne of disposable nappies. Cloth nappies, on the other hand, usually become hand-me-downs, contributing to even greater waste reduction.

Inhabitant’s Initiative

A Fredrikstad mother is behind this nappy initiative. With convincing arguments about the environmental gain in choosing cloth nappies over disposables in a direct request to renovasjonsetaten (the Refuse Disposal Service), she laid the groundwork for this arrangement.

The Refuse Disposal Service’s main motive is waste reduction. Its main focus area is to understand the customers needs and based on this adjust its services. When interests on both sides correspond, they have the opportunity to respond faster.

Easy to Apply

It is easy to apply for this subsidy, and a short e-mail application is enough. The subsidy is paid when the application and the copy of the receipt has been handled by the Refuse Disposal Service.

In Norway, about 50 municipalities have introduced this arrangement, so Fredrikstad is not a pioneer in this field.
