The Participating Cities

By including the 13 largest cities in Norway, the Cities of the Future include almost half the country’s population.

By including the 13 largest cities in Norway, the Cities of the Future include almost half the country’s population.

Some of these cities are «twin cities», they are located so close to each other that close cooperation on many measures is both natural and necessary.

The cooperation is of course broader than that:

Through Cities of the Future the cities and the Government will develop their connections with regional authorities.

The industry, businesses and general population come together to participate.

The goal is to make more use of available resources, and develop effective measures to encourage greener cities.

This effort will show measurable results and benefit other cities and regions. It will also contribute to the development of practical policies on several levels.

The Government and the municipalities will stand forth as good examples in the development of greener cities.

The cities have already developed an action programme together with the government and neighbouring local and regional authorities. Industry, businesses, organisations and the general public have been pulled in. These action programmes will in due time function as binding agreements between the government and the chosen cities. The agreements will secure the fulfilment of the plans.

The 13 cities are: Oslo, Bærum, Drammen, Sarpsborg, Fredrikstad, Porsgrunn, Skien, Kristiansand, Sandnes, Stavanger, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø.
