From the 4th to the 7th of June 2009 both young and old in Sarpsborg experienced an exciting Green Days festival programme with many activities: Bicycle racing, climate festival, ecological breakfast, «Green trip of the month», competitions and more. It was a fine mix of environmental elements and cultural activities for both adults and children.

Encouraging New Thinking

Green Days is Sarpsborg Municipality’s attempt to demonstrate the width and strength of the efforts laid down to improve the environment in Norway and Sarpsborg. The purpose is to make the environmental work in Sarpsborg visible, encouraging the public and business sectors to focus on the environment and new thinking, and providing inhabitants with examples of how to live a greener life. Children’s relation to the environment was given special attention this year, but the main topic during Green Days was how to meet environmental challenges, in particular those related to energy, green transport, consumption and waste.

On the opening day, school children in Sarpsborg attended Vennergidag (Energy Friends Day) 2009 and in Hafslund Hovedgård (Hafslund Manor) the international climate conference CC9 was held. In addition, the world-wide Environmental Day was celebrated, in the form of various activities. Children from nursery schools gathered for an event on the 5th of June. On Saturday there were different activities going on in the city centre and an energy event for children was held in Hafslundparken (Hafslund Park). The 2009 festival ended Sunday, with various family activities.

Vennergidagen

The Rainmakers Energy Day is a national event focusing on energy and environment. On the 4th of June 2009, fourth- and sixthgraders from primary schools in Sarpsborg and neighbouring municipalities gathered in Fredrikstad for a rather unusual school day, where activities related to energy and the environment, a big celebrity concert and an award ceremony were among the highlights.

The World Environmental Day

5th of June is known world-wide as World Environmental Day, when the United Nations (UN) encourages people and politicians to discuss environmental issues. In Sarpsborg, the event was celebrated through activities for both children and adults, aiming to strengthen knowledge of environmental protection and climate challenge.

The International Climate Conference – CC9

The climate conference CC8 was a huge success in 2008, with more than 100 well-known influential participants from politics, business and academia. The follow-up CC9 conference was held in June 2009.
