The Brøset area is 350 decares (about 90 acres) and situated only four kilometres from the city centre. Located in sunny and beautifully cultivated surroundings overlooking the Trondheim Fjord, this area represents a rare resource for urban development.

The Brøset area is commonly associated with the previous Reitgjerdet Hospital, an asylum dating from the 1860’s.

Setting Environmental Targets

Through dialogue with research communities, local inhabitants and businesses, the Brøset area will be transformed into a new environmental friendly suburb of the future, with low energy use and healthy building materials. This presupposes setting environmental targets that go beyond today’s regulations. Through building densely and securing a variety of buildings and housing solutions, including affordable and low-deposit houses, a good and varied housing quality will be secured.

International City Plan Competition

In the planning process for Brøset, Trondheim Municipality has decided to include an international (European) competition in 2010. The aim is for the municipality council to decide on a zoning plan during the fall of 2011.

In 2007 a workshop was held on carbon neutral living arrangements, with participants from Trondheim Municipality, Trondheim University (NTNU/SINTEF), the Norwegian Housing Bank, Enova, the Ministry of Environment and the construction industry. Supported by the Housing Bank, in 2008 NTNU/SINTEF did some preliminary work on carbon neutral living arrangements. In the planning process to come, Trondheim Municipality will cooperate with research communities in NTNU/SINTEF, using Brøset as a case study in low carbon suburban planning.

Brøset as a Cities of the Future Project

The development of the Brøset area is given high priority in Cities of the Future. Trondheim will cooperate with the other cities and share experiences related to planning for climate change adaptation. The cooperation will provide valuable know-how for future urban planning.

The Brøset area may well become a vital suburb with many homes and businesses as well as public services. The project represents a unique possibility to develop an integrated social and climate friendly suburb, the construction of which could relate to current discussions on urban planning, city densification and climate ambitions.
