EUROPEAN UNION
Brussels, 14 June 2011
Declaration by High Representative Catherine Ashton on behalf of the European Union on the readmission of Honduras to the Organisation of American States
The EU welcomes the decision taken by the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States to readmit Honduras to participate fully in the work of the organisation. The EU hopes that the return of former President Zelaya will contribute to the process of national reconciliation, which is crucial to enable Honduras to focus on the pressing challenges it is facing. The EU expects that national reconciliation in Honduras together with her return to the OAS will also give renewed impetus to regional integration efforts in Central America.
The EU wishes to express its appreciation to all countries that have made this outcome possible, in particular the presidents of Colombia and Venezuela for their good offices. The Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia*, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, Montenegro* and Iceland+, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and the EFTA countries Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia and Azerbaijan, align themselves with this declaration.
* Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Montenegro continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
+ Iceland continues to be a member of the EFTA and of the European Economic Area.
