Ukrainian refugees will be granted an extension of the right to drive cars in Norway

The Government has now asked the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to amend the regulations covering driving licenses so that the period for Ukrainian driving licenses to be recognized in Norway is extended from three to twelve months.

 Due to the war in Ukraine, Norway has received several thousand Ukrainian refugees, who are automatically entitled to one year of collective protection. Many of these have driver's licenses that they can use in Norway, but they will lose the right to drive a car here after only three months if the regulations are not amended. The government therefore requests that the period of validity is extended to twelve months - in line with the period the refugees have been given the right to reside in Norway as of today.

 There will be no change in the requirement that refugees must have a valid driving license from their home country for the driving license to be accepted, but we will monitor the possibility of other methods to verify driving licenses, including ongoing work in the EU.

 “We will monitor developments closely, and are ready to follow up with more measures and changes if this should be necessary”, says Nygård.
