About the minister

Entrepreneurship in Education and Training

Norway has received international accolade for our work on entrepreneurship in education. A major factor in this is the strategy See the Opportunities and Make them Work! – Strategic Plan for Entrepreneurship in the Education System (2004-2008). The Government now sees the need both to develop further and to expand efforts in this field by presenting a new Action Plan with special emphasis on higher education.

An evaluation of the Norwegian participation in the EU 6th Framework Programme (2003–2006) and the first part of the EU 7th Framework Programme (2007–2008).

For the first time, the government presents a White Paper to the Parliament focusing exclusively on the Quality of Kindergartens in Norway. The Government is proposing a new teacher education programme for primary and lower secondary education with a stronger emphasis on subject knowledge and teaching skills, quality of studies and research orientation.

Action Plan for Gender Equality

Gender equality work requires us to act here and now but also entails systematic and long-term work on attitudes. This Action Plan deals with the most important measures the Ministry wishes to implement to promote gender equality in kindergartens and primary and secondary education and training.

- A cultural or academic boycott of Israeli or other educational establishments is not part of Norwegian policy, said Minister of Research and Higher Education, Mrs. Tora Aasland, in her answer to the Parliament today.

Holberg International Memorial Prize 2009: Ian Hacking

The Holberg International Memorial Prize for 2009 for outstanding scholarly work in the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology is awarded to Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto and Collège de France Ian Hacking.

Calls for a willingness to climate solutions

The world needs an ambitious climate agreement for us to avoid further serious climate change. Such an agreement must be based on what science tells us that is necessary to stabilize the global climate, not just what we think is politically possible.

The oldest complete fossil of a primate

An international research team organized by the University of Oslo has for the last two years, in secret, studied and documented the oldest complete fossil of a primate. The Norwegian government will contribute to the work undertaken by The natural history Museum in Oslo regarding this exceptional fossil by allocating 350 000 dollars to the museum.

3800 new student places in higher education

The Government proposes the establishment of 3 800 new student places at universities and university colleges as of fall 2009. In addition, the Government also increases the funding for the higher education institutions with 80 million kroner. The measures are part of the Revised National Budget released today.

Climate for Research

The new White paper on research ”Climate for Research”, the government emphasises that public research spending will continue to increase. Furthermore, Norwegian research policy will be defined by nine research policy goals. The Government emphasizes that research should contribute to meet societal and global challenges like climate change.
