It is the Government’s goal that everyone, irrespective of origin and gender, should have equal opportunities, rights and duties to participate in society and make use of their resources. Active efforts to combat racism and discrimination are important if this goal is to be achieved.

International migration 2011-2012

Annually Norway sends a report to the OECD – Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The report , “International Migration 2011-2012 – IMO report for Norway”, is a contribution to the reporting system on migration for the OECD countries.

Proposes to repeal restrictions for Bulgaria and Romania

The Norwegian Government has proposed a bill to repeal restrictions for workers from Bulgaria and Romania. Workers from the two countries will have the same access to the Norwegian labour market as workers from other EEA countries already have.

Community engagement

In some areas with major and complex challenges in living conditions the central and local authorities join forces to make an extra effort. Groruddalen and Søndre Nordstrand in Oslo, Fjell and Strømsø in Drammen, Saupstad in Trondheim and Årstad in Bergen are the areas where central and local authorities have initiated such joint efforts.

Citizenship

The Norwegian Nationality Act and the Nationality Regulations regulate how a person can become a Norwegian national and how Norwegian nationality can be lost. Citizenship may be considered a formalisation of the social contract between the state and the citizen.

Settling refugees

Newly arrived refugees are to be settled in a municipality which will give them the opportunity to become well integrated. Settling refugees is a voluntary task for the municipalities. Integration policy focuses on ensuring that each person has employment and can participate in society.

Integration policy

The Ministry of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion has the sector responsibility for integration policy for newly arrived immigrants. This includes administration of the Introduction Act and the Norwegian Nationality Act, responsibility for settling refugees and the provision of interpreters in the public sector.
