The Old Government Building

Akersgata 40 was erected 1898-1906 after a tough competition between skilful architects. Mr. Stener Lenschow drafted the winning sketch. The structure itself, however, was completed by architect Henrik Bull (1864-1953). He had a way with details, and it was indeed Mr. Bull himself who designed all the decorations. The building we see today was originally part of a larger construction. However, this plan was abandoned due to the poor economy of the interwar period.
