Norway condemns use of cluster munitions in Yemen

Human Rights Watch reports that it has found credible evidence that cluster munitions have been used in the conflict in Yemen. 'Norway condemns all use of cluster munitions,' said Foreign Minister Børge Brende.

Norway played a key role in the negotiations that culminated in the adoption of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, which bans all use of these weapons, in 2008. Today, 116 states are party to the Convention. However, neither Yemen nor Saudi Arabia is among them.

'Cluster munitions do not discriminate between military and civilian targets. Unexploded ordnance constitutes a huge risk for children and other civilians. I urge all countries to refrain from using cluster munitions and to join the Convention banning these weapons,' said Mr Brende.
