Guidance for the period of national mourning
News story | Date: 28/08/2026 | Office of the Prime Minister
The Government has declared a period of national mourning from today until after the funeral for King Harald has been held.
There are no clearly defined rules for how to observe the national mourning period. Grief is a very personal process, and people may wish or need to mark the death of king Harald in different ways. We must all find our own way of observing the mourning period and showing our respect, as individuals, families, local communities, workplaces, organisations and as a country.
The Government has drawn up a guide for the national mourning period. This guide provides information to individuals, organisations, municipalities and companies about what takes place during a period of national mourning, as well as guidance on appropriate ways to observe the mourning period.
