Statement by Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust on the drone strikes on critical infrastructure in Port Sudan.
I am deeply concerned about the drone strikes on critical civilian infrastructure in Port Sudan, reportedly carried out by Rapid Support Forces (RSF). These attacks represent a dangerous escalation in the Sudan conflict and a threat to the civilian population.
Since Saturday the 2nd of May, there have been daily drone attacks in and around Port Sudan. Until now Port Sudan has been a relatively stable part of Sudan and is the country’s de facto capital. The city hosts a large number of internally displaced people, as well as the main offices of the major humanitarian organisations.
Repeated strikes on major fuel storage facilities in Port Sudan, including sites near the port and airport are deeply worrying. This comes in addition to recent strikes on power stations, drinking water facilities, internet and telecommunication, dams and other critical infrastructure.
These attacks have disrupted electricity and clean water supplies across Sudan. Such attacks are detrimental to the people of Sudan, including children and families who have left their homes and are surviving under extremely dire circumstances.
Indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure are illegal according to international humanitarian law. Any such attacks must stop now.
Norway’s position is clear. There is no military solution to this conflict. The hostilities must end immediately, and ceasefire negotiations begin. Protection of civilians is fundamental, and it cannot wait.
