The Norwegian System of Patient Injury Compensation (Norsk pasientskadeerstatning – NPE) is a government agency that processes compensation claims from patients who have suffered an injury due to medical error or substandard treatment within the public or private healthcare services.
Main tasks of the NPE
- Process compensation claims and pay compensation to those entitled to it under the Patient Injury Act (pasientskadeloven)
- Disseminate knowledge about patient injuries and contribute statistical data to the healthcare sector’s own patient safety initiatives
- Provide information about the patient injury compensation scheme to the public, patients, and healthcare services
- Administer the financing system for the patient injury compensation scheme
