Constructive meeting between President Zelensky and Prime Minister Støre
Press release | Date: 22/10/2025 | Office of the Prime Minister
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had a meeting today at the military terminal of Oslo Airport Gardermoen.
‘Intensive political and diplomatic efforts aimed at making progress towards a ceasefire and peace negotiations in Ukraine are under way. Norway must work with other European countries to ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest position possible before, during and after a potential ceasefire. President Zelensky and I had a useful discussion about how we can best provide assistance to Ukraine in both the short term and the long term,’ said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Meeting in Oslo
President Zelensky is currently visiting a number of countries in Europe and stopped in Oslo for a meeting with Prime Minister Støre. Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska and Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha are also in Oslo and have a separate programme.
‘Norway stands together with Ukraine in the effort to achieve a lasting and just peace. We have made it clear that Norway remains committed to providing long-term political, economic and military support to Ukraine. It is crucial to maintain a close dialogue with Ukraine to ensure that we can target our support to the areas where the needs are greatest,’ said Mr Støre.
Maintaining a high level of support
At today’s meeting, Mr Store highlighted the fact that the Government is seeking to maintain its extraordinary support to Ukraine next year, and has proposed an allocation of NOK 85 billion to Ukraine in 2026. If the Storting (Norwegian parliament) approves the budget proposal, it will bring the overall funding framework for Norway’s support to Ukraine to NOK 275 billion.
Close dialogue with European leaders
At the end of last week, US President Donald Trump and President Volodomyr Zelensky had a meeting at the White House. Since the meeting, European leaders have been in close contact. On Tuesday, these leaders issued a joint statement in support of Ukraine and aimed at bringing Russia closer to the negotiating table. A meeting of the European Council is being held on Thursday, and on Friday, Prime Minister Støre will be participating in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in support of Ukraine.
‘European leaders are now in close contact and are working together to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. We support President Trump’s position that the fighting must cease immediately. The current line of contact must form the starting point for any future negotiations. We must increase the pressure on Russia and do what we can to bring an end to the suffering of the Ukrainian people,’ said Mr Støre.
