Leaders of the Nordic countries and Indian Prime Minister Modi met in Oslo for the 3rd India-Nordic Summit. At the Summit, the leaders agreed to strengthen their cooperation.
'The Summit will lead to increased cooperation between our countries in the areas of the green transition, digitalisation, innovation and trade. It promotes closer political dialogue and will open up opportunities for greater economic cooperation between our regions,' said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, the importance of international law and the UN Charter, energy security, economic security, and climate and environmental issues were the main topics of discussion at the Summit. Following the Summit, the countries issued a joint statement on further strengthening Nordic-India cooperation.
'In today's turbulent world, we need more cooperation across national borders. The Summit and joint statement will serve to strengthen cooperation between the Nordic countries and the world's most populous democracy,' said Mr Støre.
The leaders also discussed the situation in the Middle East and the impacts on the global energy markets and food production. Norway emphasised the importance of ensuring stable energy supplies.
The Summit took place at a time when global trade is changing and there is a greater focus on economic security. The India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) and the EU-India Free Trade Agreement were highlighted as important steps forward towards further expanding cooperation. During Prime Minister Modi's visit to Norway, a number of agreements were also signed between Norwegian and Indian businesses.
