Norway increases support for demining in Ukraine

The Norwegian Government is strengthening its long-term efforts for humanitarian mine clearance in Ukraine. Through Norad, Norway is allocating up to NOK 400 million over four years to three organisations that will help protect civilians and reduce the risks posed by landmines, cluster munitions and other explosive hazards.
‘Landmines and explosive remnants of war constitute a serious and long-lasting threat to civilians in Ukraine. They prevent safe movement, agricultural production and reconstruction, and stop people from returning to their homes. Humanitarian mine action is therefore an important part of Norway’s support to Ukraine,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs, Espen Barth Eide.
Humanitarian mine clearance is essential for reviving agricultural production in Ukraine. Before Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine was often referred to as Europe’s breadbasket due to its vast agricultural areas and fertile soil. In 2022, the country was among the world’s largest food exporters, supplying millions of people in Africa, the Middle East and Asia with food.
Landmines and unexploded ordnance now render large agricultural areas unusable and dangerous, preventing farmers from cultivating the land. Demining increases food production, improves livelihoods, and strengthens both local and global food security.
Norad has decided to enter into agreements with the HALO Trust, Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
‘These are long-term investments in safety, dignity and reconstruction. Mine clearance saves now and also lays the foundation for Ukraine to rebuild the country once the war comes to an end,’ said Eide.
