Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide on the third anniversary of the terrorist attack against Israel

Today marks three years since Hamas’ horrific terrorist attack against Israel on 7 October 2023. The attack claimed the lives of 1,200 people, and 251 people were taken hostage. Norway condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms. There can be no justification for terrorism, attacks on civilians, sexual violence or hostage-taking.
The horrors of 7 October 2023 have left deep and lasting scars on Israeli society. They have also profoundly affected Jewish communities around the world, including in Norway. In recent years, Jewish communities all over the world have experienced rising levels of antisemitism. It is not acceptable that Jews are held responsible for the policies of the Israeli government. I strongly reject hatred and discrimination in all its forms, whether expressed through antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred or other forms of intolerance. The Jewish people must be able to live their lives in safety, free from fear of hatred and discrimination.
The war that followed the terrorist attack of 7 October 2023 has claimed the lives of 74,000 people. Gaza lies in ruins. Its population is deprived of the most basic necessities. The way Israel has conducted the war in Gaza violates fundamental rules of war.
We stand in solidarity with all Israelis and Palestinians who seek a peaceful future. Only a two-state solution, in which Israelis and Palestinians live side by side in security and with hope for the future, can deliver lasting peace.
