Statement by State Secretary Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik on the situation in Palestine

‘I am appalled by the images coming out of Gaza and by the desperate situation for the civilian population‘, says State Secretary Kravik.
‘According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 1,000 people have been killed since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was reached eight months ago. Continued Israeli attacks in Gaza are severely affecting civilians. The humanitarian situation is dire, and still far too little food, medicine, personnel and emergency aid is reaching an already hard‑pressed civilian population. This is contrary to Israel’s obligations under international humanitarian law. We strongly oppose Israel’s statements indicating that it intends to control 70 per cent of Gaza‘.
‘The parties must respect their obligations under the 20‑point plan and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803, adopted in November 2025. We support the talks in Cairo on the further implementation of the 20‑point plan, including decommissioning of Hamas’ weapons, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the entry of humanitarian assistance and reconstruction. The work in Gaza must get underway at full scale. The Palestinian committee that has been appointed must be allowed to enter‘.
‘The United Nations Security Council has assigned the new transitional arrangements for Gaza a clearly defined and temporary role, focusing on stabilisation and early recovery. This provides an internationally agreed framework for moving towards reconstruction and a political solution‘.
‘It is important that we maintain attention on the situation throughout Palestine. Norway has been, and will continue to be, a close partner to the Palestinian government, which is facing a precarious economic situation. Sustainable and well‑functioning public institutions are, in themselves, stabilising and form the very foundation for Palestinian independence‘.
‘Norway will continue to contribute actively to international efforts to mobilise support for the two‑state solution. Only a two‑state solution, in which Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in security and with hope for the future, can bring lasting peace‘.
