Statement from Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on the plans to expand sanctions against the International Criminal Court

It is deeply concerning that the United States has announced plans to expand sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC). This puts pressure on an important, independent court that must be able to carry out its vital work free from political pressure.
If implemented, the new sanctions would subject the ICC to US financial measures. This is a worrying escalation that could have serious consequences for the Court's operations.
The fight against impunity for the most serious crimes is a matter of concern to all states and requires collective action.
In these times of heightened geopolitical tensions, we need, more than ever, an international criminal court with broad global support that can carry out its mandate free from political pressure.
The ICC itself has done much to mitigate the impact of the sanctions. Norway supports these efforts. At the same time, the Court cannot be expected to withstand such pressure alone. Together with other like-minded countries, we are continuously assessing how best to support and protect the Court in the serious situation it now faces, and whether it is possible to prevent the announced sanctions from actually being imposed.
Norway remains steadfast in its strong support for the ICC.
