Reports that Eritrean forces have crossed the border into Ethiopia are very serious. Norway urges all those involved to show restraint and to refrain from actions that could lead to further escalation.

The people of Ethiopia have been severely affected by violence and repeated humanitarian crises for many years. Civilians are bearing the brunt of the escalation, which is compounding an already very difficult humanitarian situation.

The Pretoria Agreement remains the best framework for securing lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia. The Agreement seeks to promote dialogue, negotiations and the peaceful resolution of outstanding issues and should serve as the basis for further dialogue and negotiations between the relevant parties. International humanitarian law must be respected, civilians must be protected, and safe and unhindered humanitarian access must be ensured.

The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected. Regional and other external actors are urged to use their influence to promote de-escalation, dialogue and political solutions.

Norway supports a peaceful resolution and urges all parties to give priority to the well-being of the population.
