‘It is regrettable that the Palestinian leadership has decided to postpone the elections by close to a year. Although the conditions for holding elections are extremely challenging, it is crucial that the Palestinian people are able to choose who will lead them through this difficult period,’ said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.
‘Norway supports Palestinians’ right to self-determination in their own state. For many years, we have been a partner in Palestinian institution-building and democratic development. We also provide financial support for the conduct of elections through our support to the independent Palestinian Central Elections Commission.
State-sustaining institutions require democratic legitimacy. I urge the Palestinian leadership, headed by President Abbas, to reconsider this postponement and hold elections at an earlier date. I encourage political factions to engage in a broad national dialogue in which everyone can participate, not least young voters. I also expect Israel to facilitate the holding of the elections, as it is obliged to do. Norway will continue to support the national Palestinian institutions, including the conduct of elections,’ said Foreign Minister Eide.
