Brexit: Agreement covering citizen rights

The EEA/EFTA-states and the United Kingdom have come to an agreement covering citizen rights in case the United Kingdom leaves the EU without a withdrawal agreement.

The agreement will ensure that UK citizens who are in Norway at the time of the UK's withdrawal from the EU can continue to live here and essentially maintain the same rights as today. The same applies to their family members. The agreement also ensures that persons who have earned social security rights before the UK's withdrawal from the EU will still be covered by the EEA social security coordination subject to specified conditions.

For the Agreement to enter into force, it is necessary with the consent of the Storting. The Government has therefore sent a proposal for consent to the Storting on Friday 8th February.

In the proposal to the Storting the Government also proposes a new legal basis which will allow the Government to adopt regulations in order to mitigate negative consequences should the UK leave the EU without a withdrawal agreement.
