Prime Minister to participate at CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting

‘Both Norway and the Caribbean island states have strong ties to the oceans, and we share a common interest in combating climate change and promoting a sustainable ocean economy. I look forward to discussing these topics with my Caribbean colleagues,’ said Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

Ms Solberg has been invited to attend the annual CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting as guest of honour. Ms Solberg will give an address on Norway’s efforts relating to the oceans and climate change. The aim of her visit is to discuss topics of common interest and to further develop the partnership between Norway and the Caribbean states. Norway’s first Ambassador to CARICOM was accredited in 2018.     

The Government considers it important to ensure that issues relating to the oceans and climate change are high on the international agenda. The funding provided by Norway to the Green Climate Fund and the establishment of the High-level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy are good examples of Norway’s engagement in these areas. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness represents the Caribbean states on the High-level Panel.

‘The oceans hold great potential for job creation, for economic and social development, and for meeting the world’s need for resources. We will not be able to realise this potential without sustainable growth in ocean-based industries. And this can only be achieved through international cooperation,’ Ms Solberg said.

Through the Clinton Climate Initiative and other mechanisms, Norway supports the Caribbean countries in their efforts to make the transition to clean and renewable energy.

Norway is also engaged in other areas in the Latin America and Caribbean region, for example, peace and reconciliation efforts in Colombia and Venezuela. The situation in Venezuela will be among the topics discussed at the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting.

Ms Solberg will also hold a number of bilateral talks while she is in Saint Lucia.
