Violence and arrests in Venezuela

Since the beginning of February, Venezuela has been hit by a wave of protests and political unrest. More than 35 people are reported to have been killed. Many others have been injured. A number of protesters have also been arrested. 

“I deplore the use of violence in response to demonstrations and roadblocks in Venezuela in recent weeks. The loss of human life is deeply regrettable,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.

“I am concerned about the arrests of opposition politicians, students and protesters in connection with the unrest in Venezuela. The authorities must ensure that the right to peaceful protest and the right to freedom of expression are respected,” Mr Brende said. 

“I urge all parties in Venezuela to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue. Violence will only serve to further polarise political differences in the country. I hope that the efforts of the Union of South American Nations will bear fruit. I support its calls for all parties to tone down their rhetoric in order to ease tensions. That said, it is the responsibility of the authorities to safeguard the human rights of all Venezuelans and to ensure respect for the right to freedom of expression,” Mr Brende said.
