Dear Minister Klöckner, dear colleagues,
The Nobel Peace Prize for 2020 has been awarded to the World Food Program (WFP) for its efforts in the fight against hunger, and for creating the conditions for peace in areas with a high risk of conflict. WFP is the world's largest humanitarian organization for eliminating hunger and promoting food security.
Deep inside a mountain on an island in the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, more than one million seeds of crops from around the world are stored in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The storage facility thus contains the world’s largest backup collection of seed samples. By establishing the Seed Vault, Norway has taken on a global task that will never be completed. The best way to manage this responsibility is to do so in an eternal perspective.
Excellences, Chairperson, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, Let me start by congratulating the Director General elect, Dr. Qu Dongyu. We look forward to cooperating with you. To outgoing Director General, Dr. José Graziano da Silva, we thank you for

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible neurologic disease (TSE) affecting cervids. The infectious agent is known to be a prion, a normal protein that in this disease misfolds and destroys the brain. The development of the disease is slow and always fatal. Affected cervids show loss of body condition and altered behaviour. Contrary to other TSE like BSE and scrapie, CWD prion proteins are also found outside the neurologic system like body fluids, lymphatic tissue and excreta.
